At first it might be difficult to feel it properly, but remember that energy is moved by intention.

Know that by imagining this loving light at your chest area you are actually calling it forth. It is so.
You can help the process by recalling a very happy experience in your life and really feeling it. Also smile while you do the exercise... it helps awakening the centre and makes you feel good. Smile at your heart center too... while you imagine the light of pure love and compassion inside of it.
Perhaps you will feel a warmth... a pleasurable feeling at your chest area.
Send it, by imagination... to the Earth for example. It will help you feeling it.
Do it for as long you like... it's very up to you. Personally I've never done a session longer than 30 minutes, but now I am more like practicing it moment to moment.
If you still find it difficult you can try with this guided meditation. It's great... wonderful to help you really feel heart energy.
