I think the real message to take from this is to just be yourself as much as you can. Do the things you like/want, act the way you want, and enjoy the things you want. It's all a prequalifier; if people can't accept you for who you are, then you don't want to associate with them anyway. And if they can, well then you've found a friend (or girlfriend) for life. Plus being yourself takes a lot less work than trying to keep up a constant facade.
